Wine regions

Lupaia is at the centre of the Tuscan wine triangle, between Chianti to the north, Montalcino and Montepulciano.

Montalcino

The Brunello di Montalcino are some of the finest reds in Tuscany. The ‘Consorzio’ dictate a Brunello should be 100% pure Sangiovese grape and aged for two years in wood barrels. You’ll find the younger second DOCs, called Rosso di Montalcino, are lighter wines. Nearby wineries we love include Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Uccelliera and Podere Le Ripi.

Montepulciano

Famed for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The DOC stipulation is for a minimum 70% Sangiovese, the blend makes the younger Rosso wine a little softer than Montalcino. One of the most historical wineries in town is the Cantina De’Ricci, whose fascinating cellars, built in 1530, can be visited beneath the Ricci Palace in Montepulciano.

Chianti

The vineyards between Sienna and Florence produce the Chianti Classico. The symbol of an authentic bottle of Chianti Classico is the Gallo Nero, black rooster, which is encircled in a red border if its Chianti Classico Standard, and a gold border if it is Riserva. Riservas are produced from some of the finest grapes and aged for a minimum of 27 months to provide an additional full-bodied flavour.
